Just like the title says. I have gotten conflicting points from different masons here. I'm just wanting an accurate quote for a fireplace, and what substances I can use and which are more cost effective?

Ok masons, which is really less expensive: real rock or man made?

It wasn't that bad. My wife and I did ours in about 2 days. I went the old fashioned way with metal lathe and then buttered it with mortar mix and then put the rocks on. Here's a picture, it's smooth river rock with flag stone hearth. It has actually darkened a bit over the last 15 years and looks better now than when the picture was taken.

i used the same rock pictured above to cover a deteriorating flower planter that was made of brink in front of my house. 50 yrs of rain had the brick falling apart. it was pretty easy to cover with chicken wire and that stone. i noticed it looked way better when it got wet (darker) and i found a solution that you can spray on it to make it look wet when dry. it looked amazing. it only cost about 20$ extra.
