Anyone hunting NM unit 21 this year?

Going to try like heck to get a scouting trip in this weekend, I'm sitting in the Pittsburgh airport playing on Google Earth, to unit 21 in the Aldo Leopold Wilderness area. Let me know if anyone drew tags or bought any left over tags also. I will gladly help with any info I get. I just got my wilderness and Gila maps last week in the mail, should be interesting. And after talking with a biologist there is a chance at mulies and coues deer in the south part of the unit.

I've hunted 21 for years on a private ranch so I'm know help on the public land. I'm in SE Area.

yes there's muleys and couse and some huge elk.
been lots of timely rains this year and everything I've heard come from landowners mouth is there's some bigger than average deer and elk this year.

if you can swing a bear tag id do it....lots of big ones are seen on our hunts

It was a good trip, nearly died on the interstate, tracked a Mulie buck 4x4 for .5 miles and got to within 35 yards but does busted me, and then barely got off the mountain driving in the snow and ice. Lots of adventure, quite a few deer, BIG country. Good times indeed

What area did you hunt? Looking like I'll be going to 21 this September

September is HOT and you better be ready to spend 10-12 hours a day behind your spotting scope. If you want big deer go on the divide and hunt the Aldo Leopold Wilderness. September is a super hard hunt, I'd suggest January. Area will depend on how good of shape you are in and if you like to hunt up top. Hike up high, bring your camp, carry water with you, the canyons are very steep but flat on top. Get away from the roads and you are golden, NM hunters love them some road hunting, luckily there are very few roads. It is not high alpine glassing either. It is picking every juniper bush apart for hours on end until they pop out at you, as my buddy says, "it's like playing where's Waldo, except more places to hide and he is camouflage"

Well I live in southern NM(alamogordo) so I'm only 2.5-3hrs away. I plan to hunt it as much as I can or until I get a buck, which I think is not likely. But the more time in the field the better so I'll start off in sept. I do plan on getting out there far. I don't think I will have too much a problem with the physical shape part. I am not a marathoner by any means but I am "fit for combat" and considering if I get too tired I can go to my truck drove home and rest for a day I don't see a problem.
Is the Aldo leopold the best place to start?
I am not trying to kill a monster, will be my first year hunting. Would like quantity over quality.
I plan on scouting starting next month. On my list to scout are west of radium springs, west of Winston and south of dusty.anywhere better?
