    From spike to 169"

Lets get this Monday started off right . Sorry if its been posted before.....everyone has a side in this debate, I'm for letting them grow because you'll never know what they'll be if you're whacking them, even if they are "inferior". Wish I had a wall full of inferior 169" deer:

here's my question on this topic...so please let me hear your thoughts....

I'm on a 600 acre lease around the lake Brownwood area...we are bow only...but the land around us gun hunts.....so who's to say if I (out of respect for what's to come) let that little 8 go this season...that I'll see his growth...or him ever again next season or the next?

And in no way am I taking a stance....just curious. Seems like this makes way more sense in a high fence area....

I'm all for shooting spikes but defiantly not when they're 1.5

                        It's a shame he wasn't a 6 pointer at 1.5 because I bet he would've broke the 200" mark!

The only thing that is certain in that scenario is you will never see his growth if you kill him. I get what you are saying and there is no good answer to it. I have killed some mature bucks because I knew they were roaming onto neighboring properties and I have let many walk. Of those that walked, it is generally a 50/50 chance they return. Mother Nature is much harder on these animals than most neighbors ever thought of being.

To the OP, what a great story to post.

To be honest with ya, and I'm not trying to be a jerk here, the only thing keeping you from harvesting that small 8 is personal preference. To many people, they would feel better about themselves if they let the deer walk in hopes that the rifle guys would pass as well and let the buck mature. (I happen to he one of these). Some guys wouldn't chance the buck getting shot, so they would do what they thought was necessary to take the trophy home.

Now, I wouldn't say that you could never see great results from low fence places, because most of the shows you see on tv are low fence hunts with quite a few acres. The decision comes when you know for a fact that the buck has to travel past more hunters than just yourself.

Well they way I see it if you kill him then there is ZERO chance of him growing and getting better.
