    Topo maps for iPhone

Looking for an app that will allow me to save topo maps beforehand and view them on my iphone without service and using only GPS. Basically I want to use my iphone as a rudimentary (or maybe better than that) garmin type GPS. Topo maps are a must but would like some aerial views too if able.

edit: I will probably use an external GPS receiver (like the Bad elf) so the GPS should actually be pretty accurate.

You can use the free maps with the trimble outdoors app. Not sure if you can use them without service though. You could take snapshots of the area which will save them in your photos to look at them.

I can download the USGS topo maps for free and save them as PDFs but I'm looking for something that will allow me to geo-reference the map. Basically I want the map and a dot on the map showing where I'm at.

Not sure if available on the Iphone but I use Backcountry Navigator Pro on Droid. Will do exactly what you want. If Apple does not have that, look at Motion X GPS. I used that when I had an Iphone and it will also do what you want, only problem is it had a tendency of losing all my waypoints when it updated.

I use the Whitetail Freaks Property Manager App on my iPhone. It has a great aerial map function. You can outline property lines to calculate acreage, drop pin locations to mark points of interest (stand locations, camp, rubs & scrapes), etc.

Great little app that works through gps with no service. I use mine for multiple property navigation.

Does the whitetail freaks work in areas where you don't get service?

Yes, the app works on GPS technology. We don't have any internet or cell phone service on our lease in Schleicher County and it works great!

They even have a service where you can order a map after you've pinned everything the way you want. We haven't looked into that just yet but probably will.

I have the Backpacker GPS Trails, it has that function. I should point out that I have had problems with it in no service areas before. There were some maps that I had saved (I know I saved them, I double checked before I left), but when I got there they wouldn't load in correctly. It could have been a problem with my phone though.

I'm tempted to check out some of the other apps mentioned in this thread though. Take two apps with the maps I need loaded. One of them ought to work...

Hunt ONx maps from huntinggpsmaps.com. Download the app and you can save a lot if stuff offline on your phone and refer back to it later and yes it will
Show you where u are at on the map
You don't need the subscription to save maps offline
