    Trailer Title

Looking to buy a used custom trailer from a guy at work, he doesn't have a title, will I be able to register it in my name? Or will I have to track down the previous owner?

You should be able to register it as a homemade trailer without title. If it was built by a manufacturer and not someone in a home shop there are different rules, but I'm not up on those. Someone more versed in the letter of the law hopefully can help on manufactured trailers.

If it has a vin I would think you need the original title or go through the hassel of filing for lost. They used to let you register anything pretty much as homeade but they lady told me they are cracking down on that. Doubtful a cop would ever go searching for a VIN but thats what she told me.

              Trailer Title

What's the GVWR for the trailer?
In Texas a title is not required on trailers under a certain rating. I think 4500#, but not sure on that.
Bill of sale and vin number should be all you need. If it's got current plates on it now, it's even easier.

Depends on the county I think, I had a huge hassle with this...finally got before JP and got a title in my name. That was Montgomery co, they inspect them now...you can not just say homemade.

take his registration, bill of sale to tax office and tell them its GVWR of 3500lbs and you will be good to go.

Texas will not title a trailer 4000lbs or less even brand new name brands.

Autotitlerecovery.com. It will cost you $250 but they will file all paperwork. You have to buy a bond for 3 years.
