    How Dangerous Is The Border?

Many of you know that for several years FoTeef and I have been involved in a research project on the Rio Grande. We have run over 1000 miles of the river from salt influence up to Big Bend.

In a few weeks we plan to work the river mainly above Amistad and above the Foster dam. We have encountered many groups crossing in the past and virtually every bluff has watchmen on it on the Mexico side but never actually had a confrontation with the cartels.

My question is...will this year be more dangerous? Anyone on the river above Amistad?

I've noticed nothing new or different along the river north of Laredo on the Mexico side. Just the same ol song and dance so to speak. Some guys on here could probably chime in about south of Laredo, but I personally don't know anyone with information above Amistad.

They take the path of least resistance terrain wise and also there needs to be something for them go to(town close by or border patrol)on the other side. North of Amistad offers none of these.
The border patrol is no obstacle. Most want to get caught. Watch the news. Now they are going to build a huge shelter for them to live in. Oh yea. With our money.

Im very well versed on the river North and South of Laredo. I have seen every inch of it. Lots of crossings from Labota down to Falcon. The river is beautiful once you get 20 or so miles above Laredo. Its a nasty pigsty below Laredo.

I would rather spend a week on the border than 5 minutes putting gas in my tank at any Detroit gas station!

Steve, I was on the river on our ranch last weekend... talked to BP and they said it was pretty quiet in the Del Rio Sector, but it has been other than a few flare-ups. We're south of the dam, but I wouldn't think Amistad would be bad, and above that, it's pretty much deserted with little to attract illegals. At least from Maverick Dam up to Amistad it's no worse than any other time. Just be wise and vigilant and you should be fine. The Del Rio Sector has some bad a... air boats they use below the dam! Yours would fit in fine there. Would love to be out there when you do your run. We have 8 miles of frontage and most of it is absolutely beautiful!... but DANG the water is COLD coming out of the bottom of Amistad!

River has changed significantly recently... Towards the end of June there was about 12 inches of rain within a few hours in the Langtry area... Majority of the heaviest rain was confined to a small area but was enough to really cause major flooding in and around the rio grande vega areas... Lots of sand\gravel bars and large rocks are scattered where the river was unobstructed previously... Be safe out there and PM or call me if there are any other questions you might want more information about..

Rather than eating the maggots, lets use them for fish bait, and eat fish. Maybe Washington could use this logic .

                      Carry on with the OP

Just fished Falcon a few days this passed week. Sounded like a freakin war zone Tuesday morning around the dam. Lots and lots of gunfire. Wednesday was quiet as can be. There have been folks fishing the Mexican side of the lake with no issues according to tackle shop owner there in Zapata.I hope you will start a live thread on this dig, going to be really good. That river holds some fine stuff from what I have been told.

Definently a little nervous about my deer lease near Zapata. no issues yet, but it certainly has a different feel this year and is definently on my mind.

Definitely not a friendly border. Never have these issues on Canada border. I hunt there.
