Firefighters I need input on fire trucks

Guys, I've been kicking around the idea of having a good used fire truck around to put out small fires on the property. Whether it's a fire started by a careless person tossing a cigarette butt, a power line transformer throwing sparks, or a hay baler fire. Sometimes a hand held fire extinguisher isn't sufficient. I know this will necessitate being trained to operate the truck and to fight wild fires etc in a planned way.

What I want to know is if a mid size old International pumper truck would work for the type fires I want to be equipped to fight? Yes, I have seen the brush fire type trucks.

Would like something with a tank on it and get a strainer and maybe filter to use lake or creek water.

Not sure a brush truck would be sufficient.

Might need something capable of making foam too.

    What are your professional opinions?

The nearest VFD is several miles away. Will only be planning to fight fires on my own property. Don't want to risk getting sued over fighting fires on someone else's place.

Brush truck with 300 gallon water tank would be perfect you can use suction hose and get the pump to fill from a creek if hooked up right

If you start looking at CAFS (foam) systems you start getting into mega bucks!!! The Texas forestry service auctions off several usable trucks a year. Your best bet is a trailer with 250 or 300 gallon agriculture tank, a pump and a few hoses and nozzles. You can always look at firetrader.com for ideas and pricing...

Ever consider just using a water truck like they use to build roads? Just drive by and douse the flames. You can get them with 2-4,000 gallon tanks. Just an idea.

We use a 1250g Wylie trailer that the free loading farmers use to fill their sprayers with water and chemical. They already have a Honda pump on them and 30' of hose. You can buy a quick connect spray nozzle from Wylie also.

I'm not a fire fighter, but I've fought wildfires. Anything that takes more than a brush truck is probably more than you should be attempting to fight by yourself. Get a dozer or track loader and cut fire breaks to keep it contained.

Whatever you do make sure that it has the ability to pump and roll if you are handling grass fires. It's a very useful tool in that setting

Prevention would be were to start. Has stated above, fire breaks, cleaning out under growth, etc.

Also look into training. Wildland or grass fires are a moody thing and can be bipolar. Get with your local VFD and get a game plan.

I would check out the fire skids that will fit into your truck and have a reservicing point central on your property. Preperation is key.

Good luck with this and please stay safe.
