    Where to elk hunt?

Never been elk hunting and my brother and I are wanting to book a trip next year. Any suggestions on where to go?

Never been elk hunting and don't know much about it, but I went on a family vacation up to Montana earlier this summer. Talked with a local fishing guide and the elk hunting sounded pretty good

I hear Colorado and Utah are hot spots, but I don't really have any personal experience either.

You might take a peek at the elk thread, lots of good info there:

I would think Colorado OTC or buying a landowner tag is your best bet for next year. I think Utah has some OTC. Depending on budget you can get good landowner tags in New Mexico. There are some private ranches in Colorado but they get pricey. All depends on what you are looking for. Balance of cost, quality, DIY vs guided, public vs private, and draw tag vs OTC/landowner.

Leaning more on the private guided hunts.

Surely others will chime in. I hunted with Beaverhead outfitters years ago in the gila. I drew that tag but they have landowner tags. Cielo vista is one ranch the primos guys hunt on and it looks awesome. There are tons of places and depends on budget. You could do the Mescalero Indian reservation but it's $12-13,000. If no one else chimes in, you could call some booking guys and see what they have. Hunting fool, cabelas tags, and bcs all have places they book.

I will be going on my first Elk hunt Sept 18th this year with Rudy Steele Outfitters in Parachute, Co. My stepdad goes just about every year with them with a high success rate. "Hopefully I have the same" I could shoot you his number if interested.

If truly open budget then look at white mountain apache reservation, lodge at Chama, vermejo park ranch, etc. they are high dollar! If up for adventure I would look at going to BC with someone like tuchodi river. Cool wilderness, tons of elk and could add other species if you want.
