If i were buying a bowfishing rig, i would buy a Quinn recurve and a retriever reel. The Quinn bows have metal riser and are about $200.00. INHO, a retriever reel is th eonly way to go. The recurve will give you quick shot capability and you wont lose too many arrows with the retriever reel. Good luck. Woody

Hey Dwright, Depending on what kind of bowfishing rig you think you want, you can get set up for about as little or as much as you want to spend.
What I did was bought some old "vintage" recurves and put an AMS retrevier reels on them, and shoot instinctive. You can find them in a lot of places, but Ebay is probably the most common. If you log on and do a search under the category of Sporting Goods and use the words "recurve archery", you'll get anywhere from 200 to 300 hits. There are several good bowfishing equipment sites as well you can look at. www.sullysbowfishing.com is my favorite, but there's also www.backwaterbowfishing.com and others.
That is one end of the spectrum.
The other end is the brand spanking new compound all decked out, and the Caddillac of bowfishin' bows is the Oneida, and they make several models. The top model is the Osprey. And you can put all kinds of stuff and gadgets on them.
For a good place to puruse and read about bowfishing and all related things, you can go to www.bow.fishingcountry.com and look at their forums. It ain't no Green Screen, but is sure is a good place to learn about bowfishing, bowfishing equipment, boats, tournaments...you name it.
If you'd like to know more on specifics, PM me and I'll help you with what I know and use. I'd also recommend joining the TBA (Texas Bowfishing Association) www.texasbowfishingassociation.com.
I warn you though, Bowfishing is about the most addicting thing you'll ever do! You'll shoot more arras in one night than you'd shoot in 10 3D tournaments!
Good luck!

I have 4 different types of bows, but the one I like to shoot the most is my Browning Baracuda. It is great for bowfishing and the retriever reels are the only way to go especially for a beginner. I also have a PSE kingfisher that I like, but with a a recurve they can be a little to long sometimes. The baracuda has a short axel to axel and is very light weight. I also have 2 old compounds that shoot well, but the draw weight will get to you sooner or later after a long day/night of fishing.
