field turf/ artificial turf for residential use. anyone know much about it?

I know design tech has it at their model park, but I'm curious to the cost, warranty, life span, maintenance, prep before it's laid, and everything else about it. Anyone have any experience? Looking for it for a second home so the yard doesn't have to be watered, or spend your entire weekend mowing it every time you go. I know it's not cheap, but compared to a sprinkler system, and the maintenance it could be worth it. It would also seem to keep the place cleaner and fewer insects.

    Sticks,

We installed field turf in a court yard here in our office. Our cost was about 2.99/sqft, we did the install ourselves so I don't know what professional install cost is.

There isn't a great deal of site prep other than spreading pea gravel as a base. Laying, cutting and seaming the turf. Then you top dress it with fine sand or rubber pellets to make the turf tips stand and to provide body and cushion. (we actually never made it to completing this stage).

Obviously the benefit is no watering or weekly maintenance. However, there are several yards in my neighborhood that have it and it will begin to fade over the years, even with little to no traffic. Additionally weeds can root at the edges, so some maintenance is required. You run a vaccum over it every so often to remove debris and "fluff" the turf.
Last, don't expect to have a "barefoot" yard, that stuff is HOT on a sunny day, even at 85 degrees the turf is hotter than what my barefeet can stand.

    Hope this helps

As said above very little maintainance. They say it needs to be resurface every ten years but that is with way more activity than you will ever have.

There is a company called Waterless Grass. I have sen their product in Las Vegas and was amazed how real it looks.

I have seen this stuff go for about $2.79 per square foot. That is a bit high in my opinion.

I found some yesterday they warranty for 8 years but say it should last up to 25. They sat it won't fade due to their manufacturing processes. It will get warm, but I wear shoes anyway in the country all the time so that's a null factor. It seems to me like a great option if it will last in texas heat and summers. We would plant some trees in and around to help shade it, and it seems like when we show up on Friday all we would need to do is use a blower on it. I mowed for 6 hours last weekend and had another 4-6 left to finish it all at my grandpa's place on 6 acres. Granted, we wouldn't install 6 acres of this stuff but the immediate yard would be great, then we could use a brush hog to mow the rest. 15' passes are better than 48".

Please elaborate. The new market street creekside here in the woodlands has an area of this stuff and it looks awesome. We are getting close in our project of making a decision.

Even if you resurface every 10 years, depending on the size of yard, it may be cheaper by the time you calculate the savings. No water, no cutting it every week or two. Saves you time and money in the long run I would think.

I did the research and didn't find much but happy customers. So I put it in my backyard. I like it a lot.
