    Bilge pump for water transfer

I'm planning on setting up an IBC tote water trough on our place to provide a second water source for deer and the other critters. We don't have a water wagon or pump and would be transferring water into the tote from 55 gallon barrels. Would a bilge pump wired to a marine battery do the job effectively? It doesn't have to be blazingly fast, but I don't want it to take all day either. Anyone have any experience transferring water this way? Any pumps to avoid?

I use the $20 harbor frieght bilge and a 65 gallon tank to fill my tote. 4 trips and it's full. Takes about 14 mins to fill the 65 gallons. I use a marine battery vs plugging into my ranger.

I use $20 worth of 1.5" clear plastic tubing from Home Depot and siphon it from the barrel. I carry two 55 gallon barrels in the back of my truck and it's empty much faster that that pump would. The only caveat is that you must be able to back your truck up very close to the tote.

We don't plan on putting ours in a feed pen because we have blackbuck antelope that occasionally wander through and I'd like to have water available to them as well as the axis and white tails. Only concern is pigs messing things up, but we really haven't seen many around since paneling off some of our feeders. We've had a gravity trough set up right by camp for years with water lines running above ground with no issues. The float is covered though by a heavy metal swinging hinged door. Planning on surrounding the trough with cinder blocks to prevent it from tipping over.

yup.....just got back from doing this again. I was reminded again what a nice purchase this was. We had a lot to get done and it was nice not a spending a whole day doing this with an electric bilge pump. 2-3 minutes and its done.

How many feet of hose were you pumping through with the bilge pump you had and what was it rated for in GPH if you don't mind me asking? We'll be able to pull right up next to our trough.

1200 GPH......50' water hose. It could have been a little shorter but that's what the setup dictated to get shade on one of the tanks. If ti was shorter I'm sure it would have taken some time off but 30-40 minutes is still too long when you have to do 4 to fill and drain.

The new pump is 10' of suction hose and 25' of fill hose.

Here is the pump I use and have for going on 4 years. Takes about 10 minutes to empty a 55 gallon barrel. Made a stem to drop down into the barrel out of 3/4" PVC, 90D glued to it, then 3/4" female adapter to attach to the pump. Other side gets a standard water hose to how ever long needed to reach the tote.

I have even run this on a 12V deer feeder battery once.

Sounds like the cheapest route so far. I'm all about that.

Glad they work for you. Humper burned two of those up before we went to the gas powered pump.

That would be an hour for a full tote if my math is correct..

                        Yeah it is.

One other thing, I'm only a few minutes from the ranch house to refill the barrels. Those who have to travel some distance over rough country or fill multiple stations may not care for the barrels.....or you strap more of them to the truck or trailer.

Only on 460 acres. No where on the ranch is very far from camp

Yeah, I am only using it a couple times a year, so that may be the ticket. Only use it to refill a tote hooked up to the travel trailer. Might go thru 500 gallons a year.

I am pumping 100 gallons at a time and that pump does get burning hot just doing that.
