    Alaska Caribou Hunters

Thought it would be in our best interest to start a thread of questions/answers we will have about gear, food etc. for our upcoming hunt without having to dig through the original thread. This hunt is right around the corner.

Was thinking about food. Should we bring Mountain House meals up? Should we buy them there? Or will we be buying, packing, and bringing other food for the trip once we all get up to Anchorage?

For the AK Licences / caribou tags? What exactly do we need to buy? Is there a specific unit? Should we do this online or wait until we all get up there so we all buy the correct thing?

These are some of the questions that I have. Rick bought his tag online but I believe Jason and I are going to wait until we get there to buy ours.

As far as sleeping accommodations, I know we will be in tents but are we renting/buying cots or bedrolls?

No, do not wait until you get there. Speak to the game biologist assigned to the area that you plan to hunt. He may even change your mind about hunting that area, as caribou herds change drastically in size and territory in short periods of time. After you have decided where you are going to hunt, start speaking to guides and air charters who fly to those areas. If you are doing it all yourself, try to speak to someone who hunted the area no earlier than last season. Anything that you buy in Alaska is going to be 10-25% more than here, so lighter items like freeze dried food, buy here. Heavier items like a yard of beef summer sausage (hint hint) get there. It's OK to be a little heavy going in, because you will be consuming your food, and there will be some allowance for meat going out. You air charter will give you a weight limit. I can tell you this, the days of short, cheap flights to decent caribou hunting out of Anchorage or Kenai are gone. The largest herds are in far Western and Northern Alaska right now, and you'll have to get to Kotzebu or Fairbanks to access them. Kotzebu is a nightmare weather wise, but the hunting can be very good. Do your research and you will likely have a great trip.

We will be eating real food for the most part. Sleeping in sleeping bags ontop airpads. If you do not have any of these things let me know I can rent them from rei. We will take mountain houses just for backup

Post up what you want to eat. Hot dogs burgers etc. I will make a costgo/sams run. You just need a caribou tag no specific unit

About to purchase a caribou tag and hunting licence online. (I'm assuming we have enough time for the licence & tag to get to TX via U.S. Postal Service.)

Will there be any opportunity for fishing? Just want to know if I/we should also get a couple day fishing licence combo?

Looks like this is what we need (in addition to the bou tag).

As far as food goes, I'm good with anything y'all decide. I say keep it simple. For that matter I can handle MRE's.

I'll be wanting to rent a sleeping pad at the very least but if we can get cots that would be great.

Tony, when you get the licensing figured out post up all the details so I can get mine done.

Same as Geezy no preference on meals, if cots are easy to rent better to sleep and can store gear under makes more room in tents. Appreciate all your efforts Tim really looking forward to this!
