Well it was a great three days with my Dad and a few other couples down in the "big Port M". Unfortunately the fishing was off for us. My Dad and his buddies are croaker slingers and finding bait was non-existent down there. The croaker guy Capt John said they had a poor season netting croaks and the masses left in late May.....He told us one 5-10 minute pulled usually got him 100+ dozen croakers....we watched him scrape together 2 dozen in 5 pulls and he told us he was done for the year himself so anybody heading down that way better bring their own...
With only two of the four guys with any artie experience and the other two over 60 years of age it made for no wading and a low fish count but a great time otherwise. I realized how much I miss the salt this past weekend and with the blue water in at the jetties and running down the IC it was a beautiful experience. Pristine clear flats, green trout water and low boat numbers was the order of the day. Unfortunately the camera I took to deal with the salt was not very good in capturing it. Come on Santa Claus...
.
The fishing was tough with the full moon, wind and heavy grass but we managed. The grass severly limited the ladies as the weedless gold spoon was virtually a nonproducer. Topwaters caught a few smaller trout but the Gulps were the order of the day. We also caught a lot of 13-14" trout which is not the norm down there I'm told. Seems like some of the guys that brought croakers with them from other places had some good stringers.
We caught most of our redfish fish on new penny or pearl white Gulps on the flats in potholes....We probably caught 15+ plus undersized and probably lost just as many with hooks pulling out. I also lost what would have probably been an over near the boat but would have tagged him. Big red was 26" ...big trout was 25.5".
Here are a few pics.... again a great weekend with Dad and another reason to get back down closer to the salt....
Ready to roll......

early morning coming out of the port...

Waiting for Capt John to come through...

Taking it easy...

Two of us caught these fish late Thursday afternoon on a quick trip. Wish we would have spent more time in the flats.

A pretty good trout morning.....limit is 5 down in Port M and we had some wives with us....

Pretty good red afternoon with totals caught but only 5 keepers....that morning was plain pitiful but with four Forty Creek hangovers we didn't try too hard that morning.

Sunset over the salt.....Doesn't get much better.....

Overall a great experience. Port M is about as close to Caribbean type waters as I've seen on the Texas coast. I will be back...and better prepared
