    Whirlybird's

Is it necessary to have whirlybird's on your roof? Our roof has never had any and was wondering if they would help out on our Cooling bill. When our AC comes on, there is a surge of heat that comes out first. Just wondering cause our attic is hotter than most. Any info would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Spencer

You need a ridge vent or the wind turbines on your roof for sure !

A whirleybird is not going to keep a surge of heat from coming out on the initial startup of your AC. It will lessen the temp some but in 100 deg temps that initial warm surge of air pretty much is going to happen until the cool air pushes it out of the ductwork......much like running your faucet pushes out the cold water first to get warm water.

That being said cooling your attic is always a good thing for the temps in the house as a whole.

Just put two on, when we had our roof redone. It help a little with the heat, but also have ridge vents.

Ridge/roof vents can only let as much air out, as you can let in the bottom/soffit. You need a way to get cooler air in also.

You need both ridge vents (or turbines) and soffit vents as Dale says. If there is no where to draw air from then they will draw cool air out of your house or not be very effective at pulling cooler air into you attic.

If you do not have either ridge vents, gable vents, or turbine vents you should look into them.
