Something New To Do With The Flyrod

Went out chasing carp with a couple guys from the Orvis Plano shop yesterday afternoon. Never thought it would be as much fun as it was. Sight casting to these strong fighters was a blast. This was on Ray Bob.

    Me with my first fish:

Ben the fishing manager at Orvis with a nice one:

Def something different to kill time during the summer. Highly recommended.

The fly was tied by the guy at Orvis. His take on a 'Backstabber'. This is the fly we used.

I catch a lot of carp on the fly rod but in rivers. The water is clear enough to sight cast to them. It isn't a classy fight, just bull dog power, and if they get in the current they will be into the backing quick.

Went to the fly fishing thing at the Freshwater Fisheries Center in Athens a few years ago and there was a guy doing a talk about fly fishing for carp

I thought this was going to be something more like what I did with my dad's when I was a kid.
Figured out I could let out a bunch of line and use it like a bullwhip
I tore some wasps up in the eve of the house and ruined the end of the fly line

Carp are actually pretty challenging to catch on a fly. They're spooky suckers. You have to be stealthy. I usually use a black or an olive woolly bugger, casting to them as they are feeding in the shallows. It's hard not to spook them. I try to cast out ahead of them a few feet or behind them and hope they turn around. Once they get to where they can see the fly, I'll strip it a little to get their attention. As long as you don't line them, you've got a chance.

When I lived in Lubbock used to catch them on fly tackle in the playa lakes around town. An 8 pounder on a 4 wt is serious fun.

Got the idea watching them blow up on bread people were feeding ducks. Me and a buddy then perfected the "wonderbread wonder" fly... Think cotton ball and epoxy. Do a little chumming and hook up.

Far from the purist pursuit that is casting large nymphs and woolys to them in clear shallow water.... But it was fun!
