    Attic insulation question

Our house was built early 80's and definitely lacks in the energy efficiency dept. The insulation in the attic is probably about the third of the thickness it needs to be. Unfortunately due to many remodels prior to our ownership, putting down more rolled insulation on the floor of the attic would cover a lot of wiring that may need to be accessed in the future. So I was thinking of installing those pink 4'x8' foam panels to the underside of the roof. That would leave a 5" air gap between roof decking and foam panels. I would stop short of the ridge vent of course.

Would this help at all or would it be a waste of time?

I don't believe you would see any benefit from that. If you are concerned about wire locations I would mark them with some type of plastic tape that is joined to the roof rafters to mark their spot and blow in fiberglass to R30. You would see a benefit from that. Contact Gilbert with Thermo Insulation at (979) 676-2237, tell him Bill Morris told you to call. If you can't get him I can get you another number.

I agree with bill. Blow in loose fill fiberglass would be your best option.
