Coonhound Question

We are currently in the 7th month of owning a coonhound and she is testing our resolve. For the coonhound breeds- is it more beneficial to keep them in a kennel? We have a large fenced yard she was staying in most of the time but she's also allowed to come to the barn with me to feed horses and cattle where shes allowed to roam free during these times-- I also take her on runs with our UTV to wear her down a little. The past 2 nights she has jumped our 4' fence and travels to the local daycare down the road to kiss on the children in the morning (she goes crazy for kids). We have a 10'x20' kennel (8' tall) that I'm keeping her in now because I can't have her on the road or at someones business like that. The first time I thought it was a fluke but when I got a call this morning that she was down there again, I knew I had to put her in the tall kennel.

My question is this- I still plan on letting her come to the barn and spending quality time with her but should she be kept in the tall kennel for the majority of her time? Is that just a better option for the hound breed? She is spayed.

Double the amount of utv time and free playtime. My son has quite a few dogs, he has a large backyard and a couple of cable runs. He rotates the dogs from kennels to backyard or runs depending climbing ability. Even with all that they still need to be taken out and worked, especially the hounds. Bear in mind it's not unusual for the dogs to cover 20 miles in a night of hunting. As far as going down to the school, she's getting a whole lot of positive reinforcement when she gets there.

For sure. I know I will have to keep her in eye sight or the tall kennel now because of all the loving when she gets when she visits down there. I will definitely up the UTV time-- its seems she is going through a very high energy phase right now.

Are you taining her to hunt coons? If so, then I would keep her kenneled most of the time, to prevent her from running unwanted game. It's fine to let her run loose supervised, but try to keep her away from trash.

Yep kenneled all mine. A hound has a different mind set for sure.

Take her to the woods with some hard running Walker dogs. After a night in the woods she will sleep all day

This wiil work for sure, i ran my bloodhound with some experienced dogs from louisiana they ran hard all night, one thing for sure is my dog has the spirit but the speed and stamina are lacking compared to these hounds, i think they were on steriods,

Get a good e-collar and learn how to use it. It will help you control your hound at all times. Tri-tronics has a two mile range collar called the Trashbreaker. They are not cheap but will save you lots of aggravation.

Learn to use the tone function followed by mild correction. Watch some good youtube videos on e-collar training. It's easy to ruin a good dog if over used.

I also use Garmin GPS collars. Save hours looking for lost hounds.

Day 1 in the kennel has been a dream. I'm still letting her out with me, as usual but when she comes out of the kennel she's much more attentive and less goofy acting. She will listen when I tell her to sit. To me it defies logic that she acts better when caged up but its working so Ill just be happy.

Having raised dozens upon dozen of hounds. I would keep kenneled or chained most all the time. The only hounds we ever just let out to run free were our beagles they would run a race or two then come back.
