    GUMBO the CATAHOULA

I wanted you folks to meet the newest addition to the family.

His name is GUMBO, and he is a NALC registered Catahoula.

He is almost four months old, and weighs in just shy of thirty pounds.

So far I am pleased with his progress both in the field, and with his obedience training.

He has quickly learned many of the basic commands like sit, down, speak, and yes….. roll over.

I will start working with him on the stay command next week, which I’m sure will prove to be much more difficult to master. Kind of like asking a whirlwind to stay put.

I have run him on 17 mock blood trails so far, with 6 out of the last 7 being 125-150 yards long using only ½ - ¾ of an oz. of blood. His last track was 300 yards using 1½ oz. of blood. He has gone right to the trails end on every track thus far.

My hope is that with a good dose of training and dedication coupled with the Catahoula’s natural drive and tenacity this pup will become a top notch tracking dog.

Great looking dog Tuco! Glad you found you one in time for deer season. Give us some info on your training. On leash, off leash, rewards/treats, bell on the collar?, etc.

Nice looking dog. The lady that runs the NALC is like a second mother to me. Many years ago I wrote the software that they used to print the registration papers out. While we do not go to all of the shows anymore we do always attend the Texas show. If you want to ride along you are welcome. If I remember correctly it is the weekend before bow season this year.

I use one of these you can control the amount of blood from one drop to a big splash.
