First - I know nothing about an a/c, but I try to fix things around the house when there is a problem.
I have two Amana units original to the house we built in 1998.
Last week I noticed the downstairs unit's compressor wasn't running, but the fan was. Shut everything down, restarted, same thing.
Researched threads on TBH and Googled, determined likely suspect was the dual capacitor. Otherwise, time to call a pro.
Bought an identical capacitor from Grainger, swapped it out, turned it on, compressor kicked in, it's been cooling great ever since.
The compressor hum seems louder than it was before - I THINK. Never paid too much attention before. But it is a lot louder than the smaller upstairs unit.
Now the question : Is the loud hum indicative of a particular problem? And if so, what could the problem be?
Thanks for any insight you can provide.
