    Large flathead catfish.... Are they good to eat?

    Just wondering if they are any good to eat? 30-40 lb range.

                  From a conservation standpoint, I'd turn them loose and eat some other species of catfish instead. Yes, they are good to eat but their numbers are in decline from what I understand. Also, they are considered a sport fish, like bass & crappie.

                            I've cleaned quite a few of these myself and agree with the cleaning method. One thing different we do is after cleaning, we keep them on ice for a couple of days before cutting them up. The fat seems to turn a little darker color making it easier to see and trim off.

                              Yep, we did that too. Makes the belly especially easy to get good and clean.
