    crazy airline question

I have a whitetail mount I need to get back from Columbus, OH. They want $300 to $400 to ship it. I have some free Southwest flights. Can I have someone ship the box on a SW flight from Columbus to Houston even if I am not on the plane as long as I pay for the ticket?

I am gonna say no but you should call SW to verify.

Most, if not all airlines, require a passenger on board to care for the bags.

All I can say is with how they handle luggage, boxes etc. unless its in a pretty solid crate , your asking for damage.

If your thought is to check-in, give them the box, and not take the flight, that is not allowed. But that doesn't mean it couldn't fall through the cracks. I wouldn't try it thought. You might end up on the future flight "watch" list.

just fly up there and get it and fly back.

I'd pay the $400 bucks before I spent all day on an airplane though, even Southwest.

If it was non-stop i probably would but I am not going to spend all day doing it. Just thought I would ask.

Safest way even though its pricey is just to have it shipped.

I just shipped a big whitetail to Atombomb, in Georgia, for $140.

I just talked to my taxidermist in Nebraska and he said the same thing. $150 max.

Kevin, did you make the box/crate to ship it in? What was the size, and who did you ship it with?

                        Thanks

Yes, I built the crate ... 2x2s on the corners, 7/16 osb for the side that anchored the mount, 1/4 luann for the other sides. Once it's built, you put screws through the osb, into the plywood in the back of the manikin. I added a few 2x2s across to make sure nothing moved ... I know how gentle those drivers are.

If my memory hasn't failed, it was 20x20x36

Once you get over 3 cubic feet, it goes by "dimensional weight" instead of actual weight. I wanna say that one weighed about 40 pounds. I sent it regular ole UPS, insured.
