What to do? Would like your thoughts

Sorry might be a long read.

Some might remember, that over the last year+ I have been struggling with job change. The company I currently work for has been on the verge of closing for the past 3 years. I have no health care. I am 61 and the opportunity to find a new job is closing quickly. Based on my current finances I will need to work to 70.

I got a call yesterday from my former employer looking for someone to fill the same position I left 12 years ago. He did not ask me if I wanted the job, instead asking if I knew of anyone capable of filling it. I left job due to job stress caused primarily by the owner and swore that I would never go back. The position would likely mean a little more money Health Care and more stability.

I am struggling with this not sure I want the stress, but needing health care or at least enough raise to pay for it. It would also mean
I would not have to leave the house that I built with my own 2 hands

The post by Uncle Doug today has hit me hard, as I know that I am 1 major medical problem from bankruptcy.

I would say go for it. You are only talking 9 years and Health Care is a must (in my eyes). However, i do not know how unbearable the stress was so it hard to say. I will keep you in my prayers though and hope you make a decision that is beneficial.

I know prayer is the answer. I also know that God can not steer us if we are standing.

Have a man to man talk with the former boss. Tell him you would be interested in coming back if he could meet you half way and eliminate some of the stress you had. You may be surprised at how receptive he is. Times change, people change.

Then again, he may be a flaming azzhat.

Seems like God may already be talking to you with the opportunity in front of you. Keep praying about it.

I think you have leverage on this........ Work out the details in your favor and if you like what they offer, take it. The second time around is usually a better experience in most cases like this. As far as they know, they are the ones in need.

I can say this also. We are competitors in Waco and he called my office to ask me if I know of anyone. I believe that it was actually directed at me but can not prove that. There is a possibility that he has found out that I am looking.

Take it. At 61, your age is going to knock you out of a lot of opportunities for jobs, but you will not be told that by a possible employer because that is age discrimination and it is used, just not openly by employers. Ask me how I know this!

                            This is true.

I agree with Chew... do this! It never hurts to have that talk.

I think there are at least 3 of us who share this in common? There IS discrimination for those of us, really begins around 50+!

A couple of years ago I actually had 2 Independent Medical Sales recruiters tell me my resume was way above the scale they were seeking in candidates, but...age was reflected by experience. Both actually told me to take out a couple of companies...but it took me a YEAR to find a new career.

Fact is, at least in the medical sales business, many companies would rather hire younger, pay less, not deal with "older one's perceived as too rich in experience/attitudes?" All I know is 30 of us were laid off by, at the time, the #1 rated Biotech company in 2010. ALL were "senior" reps and it was tough!

Good luck but don't dismiss what may be a "God Send Opportunity!"
