Royal Gorge burned up last year, still in rebuilding process. victor/cripple creek gold mines are outstanding. Bishops Castle is very neat and San Isabel lake is just down the road from it. All the areas everyone has mentioned offer something else special, it is hard to pick in a state like that!

Durango area is a good base point. That will give you easy access to all activities you are interested in. Silverton is close, Animas forks is a ghost town near silverton, Ouray has some great hot springs.

My family and I took this last year in this exact area. Poor photo quality taken with redneck zoom thru my binos with my phone.

Not sure you can go wrong with any of the above.

Lake city. If camping there is a really cool park near top of slumgullian pass, deer lakes. Moose all around. Camp sites near lake San cristabol is closer to town. Not really touristy town. A really neat city park that everyone is welcome and for your 14 yr old there are always girls hanging around, nice girls, this is a family place. Been going for years. I am very found of LC. Great memories. And yes you can rent jeeps, four wheelers and the alpine loop up to engineer pass, breadth taking views. Can be a white knuckle ride sometimes. American basin on the way up, if it is full of flowers great picture place.

Been doing continuing education training today and just getting back to this. Lots of great ideas. Thanks and feel free to add more. It would have been easier to go somewhere with limited choices! I started researching last night and the number of websites and things to do in the state is just mind blowing. Going to delve into some of these specific ideas when I get freed up later.

We took the family to Durango the last 2 summers. We had a ball.

Lots of info and pics here:

Western slope is wetter/prettier than the eastern slope. Between Gunnison and Crested Butte is the three rivers area with Taylor reservoir about a 20 minute trip from the river junction. Stop at the bridge under the dam and try your hand at fooling MONSTER rainbows and Browns...I'm talking trout up to 2-3' long. VERY smart fish though. ...you will hit the wildflowers the time of year you are talking about...day trip and do the Durango to Silverton train...For serious fly fishing get a guide and hike into the black Canyon...beautiful, majestic, and great fishing. You can do raft trips out of three rivers on the Taylor which are plenty challenging. Crested Butte town is amazing. My favorite in Colorado.

Durango! Camp in RV or cabin on the Animas River! Horseback riding, white water rafting, steam train ride to Silverton, hiking, zip line, sight seeing.
