        A 12 ga with plain barrel blue books @ $300 for a 100% specimen to $140 @ 60%. Add 10-15% for vent rib.

You likely bought a money pit

That model shotgun is 50+ yrs old and replacement parts are a PIA to find

            Barrel $125
            Fore arm. $136
            Butt stock $60

All these parts are SOLD OUT at GunPartsCorp.com

My suggestion , sell it and get your money back and buy a used 870 for $150-175

If you want an auto-loader, find a used 1100 for $250-300

my grandpa had one. before he got eat up with alhiemers he ran a box or 2 of 16 gauge shells thru it and his was a 12.

I stopped by one day he had it in pieces trying to figure out why it wouldn't eject shells!

I got it now and it still works. no telling how many black ducks and teal he killed with that thing.

A possible option, find another 1148 and use 1 for parts. You can buy a complete gun less than replacement parts

Problem is you'll be spending more $$$ and have 2 shotguns that no one shoots anymore

Kinda like buying a non-running Ford Maverick , then doing a resto to make it a daily driver

Some more info., the 1148 is based on the Model 11 (A5) which is a John Browning design

Spring recoil as the entire barrel travels back during the cycling process.... That is why they kick like a mule
