    Privacy fence posts

Has anyone ever used landscape timbers instead of 4x4 posts to put up a wooden privacy fence? Big price difference.

Whoever built my fence in Nov 2008 used them. 3 of them broke in a wind storm last year and another one is rotted/broken now and needs to be replaced.

Excellent idea if you want to do it twice

As said they will warp and you will be redoing it in no time. I would look at using metal if that fits your budget, last forever in concrete.

              There's a reason they're cheap.

Kind of what I figured. Thank you for the input.

Steel posts is the way to go.

I do not mind replacing pickets or cross member 2" x 4" s. Digging concrete out of wooden posts sucks.

                    Expensive but well worth it

They are called landscape timbers for a reason! If they were meant to be used as fence posts.... They would be called fence posts! Never use them as posts! I've replaced so many of those darn timbers from last months wind storm here. Do it right the first time, you'll be happy you did!

I agree with above. I used wooden fence posts and wish I had spent the money for metal posts. If you do use wooden fence posts (4X4) buy them and the cross timbers a couple of weeks ahead of time and lay them out so if they warp they do it then and not once your fence is built. I had some 2X4s that tried to form an "S" shape and one of my posts twisted about 20 degrees bent over after the fence was finished. Bought some replacements at the local lumber yard and they didn't warp at all.
