First things first, are you hunting in an antler restricted county?

Last year was the first time I had to deal with this rule. Bought property in East Texas. I am by no means an expert, but I would definitely have cameras out so you know what you are looking for. You may see something legal, but will hold out for the bigger one you've seen on camera. General rule of thumb is outside the ears. Get a camera going and make the judgement before you shoot.

This is probably the easiest way to avoid a mistake.

Rulers don't lie - 13" inside spread! Tough part is figuring that out while they're on the hoof! Guideline is antlers outside the ears while in alert position. This is not 100%, but just the guideline. If it is close, you probably should pass. When it is obvious, it will be obvious even to a novice. Good luck and don't pass up a spike for your first...it will mean a lot to you just to get one on the ground!

I need to try that. It's foolproof! Well, almost.

Welp.. by posting this to public facing internet website...you've now caught the attention of the Game Wardens for the counties you've listed above.
You are now on a list and will be checked...re-checked, and checked again.
                    You are now being watched.
                    Don't blow it.

Seems that the most popular method for hunting an antler restricted county is to shoot, measure, discard. Kidding kinda but it happens LOTS around here.

I don't care if I get checked at all... That's why I am trying to do my best to learn now before the season...

I have been hunting under these restrictions for 7 seven years now. You will get used to it and it will become old hat after a while. The neat thing is you get to see them grow....Good luck...
