    Question for the tree experts

Below are photos of a pecan tree in my dad's front yard. The first pic shows a white fungus growing at the base of the tree. My dad had always told me that when a tree gets that growing on it, it's beyond hope & may already be dead. The middle pic shows the foliage on this tree, very sparse. The third is a neighboring tree. It has leafed out nicely. The first photo was taken a couple weeks ago, and yesterday I noticed that it has grown. My question: Is this tree indeed too far gone or is there something I can do to try and rescue it?

Doesn't look good. Most fungus that grows on the bark of trees is feeding on the heart wood. Fungus at the base can also mean that there is some root rot going on. If it is anywhere near a "Target" You oughta just take it down while its still small. Pecans are brittle trees to begin with. Whack it and stack it!

      Thanks. That's what I'm thinking.

Here's an example of a pecan with root rot and the damage it can cause. This happened on Christmas Day a couple of years ago to a house I manage.
