    bicycle question

I have a trek 7100 that needs the cables replaced. I have had no luck finding them online. Is this something that they fabricate in a bike shop? I'd prefer to install myself, but if I have to take to a shop, what am I looking at spending?

You can buy the cable and stops and make your own.

I recommend replacing the cable housing when you replace the cables. Easy enough to do and the cable/housing should be available locally at any decent bike shop.

shimano should have cables for it, try performancebike or go to your local shop
good cables are not more than $20 each, but usually a lot less.

the cheap cables for a derailleur or brake are $3 each, but for derailleurs, i prefer the better cables.

REI usually has them if you can't find a bike shop.

              bicycle question

Cables are cables. Any bike shop will have them. They're cheap. Be sure to ask for some ferrules to crimp on the end once you have it installed to minimize any fraying.

The #1 best upgrade to your brakes and shifters for smoother response and improved performance is quality cable housing.

I really like the Jagwire product.

Cables don't really stretch very much (if any). Usually the culprit of reduced performance is compressed housing.
