They used to be everywhere when I was a kid. I lived in Montgomery County (still do) but they seemed to have disappeared. I hadn't seen one in years.

Funny you posted this. Wife and I were just talking about how we never see them like we used to. (Denton Co and Navarro Co) I miss seeing them. Great porch entertainment.

Got 'em in Belmont (Gonzales County) Different from the ones I grew up watching and catching. The Missouri bugs were "flashers" meaning they would light up momentarily in flight. The ones in Belmont turn their lights on for 2-3 seconds at at time and look like a streak in the dark.

We saw some the other night walking through our neighborhood "woods". First time I have ever seen them in Texas after living here 10 years. I promised my daughter we would go back tomorrow night and catch some. I was surprised to see them. We see a lot in Wisconsin when we visit there.

I know way more than I want to about lightning bugs from my son watching Wild Kratts.

Eggs hatch in the dirt. Babies spend 2 years in the dirt. The flashers flying around are all males. Females wait in the grass and watch for a male they like. Mating period is 2 weeks out of they year. They only do the flashing period once in their lifetime.

                        Your welcome

It seems to me there are still pockets here and there and everywhere. Seen a few around Denton but not many
