    Stand prefrence

So in anticipation of the upcoming season, assuming I can lock down a lease between now and the season kickoff, I need to figure out stands. I have spent most of my hunting life in NW Arkansas, Kansas, and Missouri. I have always used climbers because the ease of shifting location and the ability to hunt high. I know people have different opinions of getting real high up, but I do prefer it. I usually hunted between 18' and 35' depending on the location and what trees are available. So this leads to a problem in south Texas, there aren't a lot of trees suitable for climbing and the ones that are can't handle someone that high up, as well as the fact that its pretty sparse in most locations to get cover from surrounding trees in that height range. I know a lot of people hunt tripods and towers. What are the advantages and disadvantages of both? Also how many people hunt ground blinds, the only reason I would be hesitant on ground blinds is the rattle bugs. I will have one box blind for sure for when I take the kids hunting. My dad typically uses tripods for bow hunting, he just backs them way up into a tree and trims a small area for him to draw and shoot quietly. Just want other opinions.

    Thanks guys.

I really like 10-15 foot ladder stands. Easy to get in and out and can use in trees that won't work with hang ons. Trust me, that is high enough if you aren't up there fidgeting and dancing. Don't leave it wide open. Have shooting lanes and background cover. I also hunt out of ground blinds. They work really well if done right. Get them up early and brush in. Try to have it where animals don't walk in from behind you. Buy a good blind like a double bull. Don't buy a cheap blind just to try, you won't like it. The double bull gives you a good field of view And if you shoot through the mesh you can get away with lots of movement.

In South Texas, I prefer brushed in pop ups due to the lack of high vegatation. JMO

Our property doesn't have a bush or tree over 20' tall and none where u can use ladder. I have been pretty much limited to popups for taking the wife and kids but didn't like the risk of being on the ground with scorpions or rattlebugs myself. Built a couple of 5' tall platforms big enough to put our popups on. They're really easy to move around by myself with a small trailer and so far haven't had any issues but a few wasps. Even at only 5', it seems like have been busted less by the deer that came in too close.

Movement other than draw is all but non existent, I just like the low exit and tons of blood from high entry shots, and I've never been busted drawing when I'm up high. But I know its probably not going to be an option here. I like ground blinds but hate the idea of snakes getting in it at night. How often if ever does that happen? I would assume there is bound to be some critters getting into it at night.

I have never found a snake in the ground blind but have had one crawl through. I just shine a light in when I get there.

I don't own climbers anymore due to their lack of versatility. Never fails I will find the perfect spot and it a crooked or limbed up tree. Easy fix was a good lock on. So now I have lock on's with good climbing sticks and ground blinds. Also as far as height being from East Texas I always get as high as I can get depending on the type of trees, terrain etc. that could be 12' or 35'

Last year in the Comfort area, We used ladder stand. Sometimes we were 5ft off the ground & sometime 15ft. We just looked for the best cover and tried to set the ladder stand in the cover. We had several areas that we were only 5ft off the ground.

For comfort, I also used a few of my climber and never got over 10ft in the air. I just looked for cover, and I would climb to that location.

                    Good Luck
