Flag Pole Help

Anyone got any advise or DIY's about flag poles? Im wanting to put a flag pole up at the house about 25-30 foot tall. I got a quote from a local guy here in angleton but he wanted like $500 to do it. I was thinking that i could do it myself for alot cheaper. Im just not sure about what size pipe to use and such. I was reading online that if i wanna go that high i need to be looking at 2 3/8" drill stem or similar. I will concrete about 3 1/2-4 foot in the ground. Anyone got any advise on this? Oh and ill be wanting to put 2 smallish flags on the pole. Like two 3x5's or so.

I have a pole at my house--about 15' tall. It's aluminum, 3-section and easily installed. Bought it at a local flag shop that is no longer in business. One thing to consider about a pole that tall--going to take a fairly powerful light to illuminate it at night if you plan on flying our nation's flag 24-7.

Mine is made from stainless steel pipe that a welder friend of mine found some where. I took some 6" square tubing and welded some guides in it to make the pole slip into the tubing evenly spaced all around. I then dug a 4' deep hone and put the tubing in the hole and concreted it in place. The 30' pole was then slid into this sleeve and I backfilled it with pea gravel. I can take the pole with me if I ever leave. I fly two 4'x6' flags and have never had an issue with anything except I have to buy two sets of flags each year. I live on a hill and the wind frays them. Every time I order new flags, I go a little more expensive hoping to get longer life. It takes a heck of a light source to iluminate flags that high, as stated above

Thanks for the info guys. And Tbar, i havent even thought about that just on account that ive just now started looking into all this. Right now i have the cheapo flag poles that you screw into the side of the house and they aint worth a crap. I just want something nice that i can put my flags on and wont cost me an arm and a leg. Thats why i was trying to look inot doing something myself.

That is what I got harbor freight has them on sale sometimes for like 50 bucks comes with PVC sleeve for concrete takes about 1/2 hr to install.

The aluminum flag pole's $500 price tag may seem extravigant but it'll last you forever. That's not a bad deal if it includes delivery and installation. I had one installed at an Air Liquide plant in Freeport just after 9/11 for $650. Flagpole still looks great except the danged Frenchies won't buy a replacement flag for it... go figure?

Personally, for what you're asking about, my answer would be to cement a 4' sleeve in the ground that will securely fit a piece of 2-3/8 drill stem. I would want 2 set screw/ bolts at the base to level the pole. Mount a pulley on 1 end and cap it nicely with an eagle or something. Then a simple marine deck clete towards the bottom. 50' of nylon rope, sandpaper and some black semi-gloss krylon and BAM!

If you go 30 feet, a 3x5 flag is going to look tiny. Go with a shorter pole or larger flag. I have a 20 foot sectional pole from austinflags.com The hole was only about 2' deep and easy enough to install myself.

I bought a 25' piece of 2 3\8 pipe.Welded a pulley from TSC on it and sanded primed and painted it and stuck it in the ground.Filled it with quick Crete and leveled it.5 yrs and its still looks good.Total cost was around$50.DIY is more rewarding and definitely cheaper. And a 4x6 Flag will look better.
