I don't particularly care if you kill all the rattlesnakes in your yard, but don't get a cat.

Cat's are not only destructive to snakes, but they kill all our other native wildlife, including migratory song birds as well.

If you want to "snake proof" your yard, remove any cover objects from laying flat on the ground. This includes tin, boards, and large pieces of junk that may be laying around the house or shed in the back. I love looking under those as there's usually a snake under them in the spring time. Found three coachwhips under one piece of OSB today. Removing cover objects doesn't prevent snakes passing through, but it does remove the desire to stay in an area.

If you must get something for your yard, get Guineas. They're not going to kill native wildlife, and they're excellent warning systems for snakes. They'll circle the snake and make a ruckus and you'll know there's one in the yard and you'll be able to take care of it how you see fit.
