Home Rule - Good Idea or Bad Idea

Princeton has home rule up for vote this week. I always hear the bad about home rule. I know there has to be something positive about it. What does the GS think?

Our little town just switched over to Home Rule this year. From what I understand there is a lot more autonomy with Home Rule so that sounds good to me.

Home Rule cities are those of a population of more than 5,000 and they can basically self govern themselves. Rather than be under general Texas law. They are free to any actions that are not prohibited by the state. Like creating ordinances against sex offenders for example. Texas law allows them to live within 1 block of a school, home rule cities can set thier own guidelines. But they can abuse that power as well, so I wanted to hear some good and bad opinions

One "new" ordinance in our town prohibits texting or similar actions while driving. Not just in school zones but all over town. We also added another council seat (6 now vs. 5) and increased terms to 3 years vs. 2. This includes the mayoral position. There are a ton of other new actions but I can't remember most of them.

Are the new laws voted on or just the council decide on the laws?

Big debate right now in Dallas ISD. I like the idea of being able to change things to better serve the learning needs in an area, but am always weary about providing too much power. I've never been a huge fan of the cookie cutter approach to learning. I think you can get much more out of kids if you can adjust to their needs a little more. Either way, where I live it is not on the table and I'm happy with the current results of our public schools. If I live in Dallas though.........there's a reason anyone in Dallas who can afford it pays for private schooling.

I like the Bunny.... I think communities should be able to implement laws as long as they are voted by the community, voting would be the key. With out a vote this could become very ugly and one sided!
