    Need a new hand ?

I need to hire another person to help here at the farm.
Mostly mowing and painting fence posts.
It would be a really good summer job for a high school boy BUT if I'm reading the rules right, they would have to be 18 years old to operate the tractor and bush hog

That seems mighty silly to me, am I reading it wrong?

    What rules are you reading?

But it would not surprise me if labor laws did state something to that effect. I remember a few years ago the Democrats caused an uproar with some proposal limiting age for " farm/ranch" labor.
They seem to think allowing or making a kid do farm work is some sort of abuse

Texas employee laws , it does not say bush hog but it does say they can't cut hay or run a combine so I figure a bush hog is out as well.

      I started running a bush hog when I was 8 or 9.
      What the heck?
I guess the state wants them all to work at the sonic

Pretty stupid law with good intentions, kids today ain't like kids in our youth. Some of the ones I see around here would stick their arm in that shredder just to see if it was working.

Probably safer for you to hire someone who is 18 anyway unless you gonna watch them every second.

        General Exemptions

When a business is owned or operated by a parent or legal custodian, the parent or custodian may employ their own children at any age to work any hours, so long as the work is non-hazardous (not prohibited) and the child works under the parent or custodian’s direct supervision.

In addition, Texas Child Labor Law does not apply to employment of a child who is:
•Engaged in non-hazardous casual employment that will not endanger the safety, health or well-being of the child and to which a parent or legal custodian has consented Casual employment is work that is unscheduled and nonrecurring.
Non-hazardous employment involves work that neither the federal government nor TWC have determined is dangerous to the safety, health or well-being of a child. For more information, see the sections below about prohibited and permitted occupations.

•11 years or older delivering newspapers on a newspaper route (exemption does not include direct sales)
•16 years or older engaged in the direct sale of newspapers to the general public
        •Participating in a school-supervised and school-administered work-study program approved by TWC
•Employed through a rehabilitation program supervised by a county judge
•Employed in agriculture during a period when the child is not legally required to be attending school
Employment in agriculture means engaged in producing crops or livestock and includes: Cultivating and tilling the soil
Producing, cultivating, growing, and harvesting an agricultural or horticultural commodity
        Dairying
Raising livestock, bees, fur-bearing animals, or poultry

Man I was running a rake in the hay fields by the time I was 12. Was driving the truck before I could see over the dash. Dad would put it in low and id stand in the seat and drive a strait line as they loaded square bales. At the end of the field he would jump in turn it on another line and away we go again.

It sure does! Making him disk in reverse! I think its much easier to teach them to look forwards and run the tractor forwards... just kidding! I would have loved to have a grandpa that spent time with me and taught me things like that! Keep it up!

The older the better, Buff. Kids these days have a maturity level about 5 years behind what ours was back in the day.

                    Good luck!

X2 nothing like standing in soft soil and getting some dirt under your finger nails. I would check with local high schools in your area or Junior College see if they have AGRI programs and know of any one looking for work. Don't count out Girls either
