    Question of former dippers

Today marks the one month anniversary since I quit dipping. Since then, I've notice some strange things going on in my mouth.

    1. Where I used to hold my pinch, the muscles in cheek spasms. Not sure if its repairing itself or trying to shrink back down to size or what.

    2. I get these white clusters of dead skin on my gumline. Its not sores and they scrape of with ease. At first, I though it was food stuck between my gum and lip until I looked at it. I had an oral cancer screening about a month before I quit and everything checked out good.

    Can anyone explain this?

Sounds like your body is trying to repair some of the damage. Congratulations on quitting.

I got the cheek spasms too. I actually still do for time to time, but I still use fake snuff when working around the place. They will go away.

White is probably the excess skin in the mouth, from being stretched out. I

        Same Here

Both things happened to me shortly after quitting, but didn't last long. It's been 5 years now...I'm very glad I stuck with it.

Congrats to all of you for quitting. I have been dipping for over 40 years and have never had any of the experiences you describe. I have quit several times, one time for over a year. Never had any spasms or the white patches but they could be pre cancerous lesions. If you had a screen done it is probably fine, but if it concerns you, I suggest having a dentist check it out one more time or even just give your dentist a call and see what he thinks.

Never had the spasms, but had the nasty white dead skin thing. It'll go away after a while. I quit Sept 10th, 2009. Best thing I ever did. I started putting the $150/month I was spending on snuff into a hunt fund and now spend all my (used to be) wasted tobacco money on hunting!

All I know is the answer does NOT include buying another can....keep up the good work!

By the way, I quit about 10 years ago and now the thought of it makes me sick at my stomach!

No lip spasms but I got the dead skin. Honestly I think that is a natural sloughing of epithelial cells, but you didn't notice them when dipping because the snuff exfoliated your mouth chemically and physically

Had the same stuff happen when I quit. The shedding skin stuff quit for me around a month or two after. The spasms I only had a few times though.

Whatever you do, don't go to webmd for the answer.
                            It'll be terrible news
