explain New Buck Antler Size Rules to a child

I have family step Grand Children visiting me soon and I need a short easy- to- understand Antler Size restrictions that I can explain and hand to the young hunters. They are rifle hunting.

    The shorter the better

One child is partially deaf, and the other boy has had part of his brain removed as a result of a tragic ATV Accident. He has short term memory loss.

    Thanks

Outside the ears or at least one "spike" (unbranched) antler.

Not real easy but I hope it helps, good luck with the little ones, Tink.

Won't there be an adult with them to tell them what they can and can't shoot? It sounds like neither one of them should be hunting alone.

Same as my dad told me when I started hunting unsupervised (it wasn't the law back then, just good practice):

"If it's not a spike, he'd better be past his ears."

This isn't the exact restriction, but if they follow this they'll be OK

Where are ya'll hunting Tink? There's no restrictions in Kerr County. You can show them the pictures on the TPWD website:

Times have changed and it seems most peoples attitude has too except mine. I was told 45 years ago and I told my children this year, as its their first year bowhunting, "shoot whatever you want this year"

                Thanks Chew

I didn't know it was a County Issue
                Thanks Sir

I will have one child to guide and the Grand mother will have the other one

the girl now 15 or 16, made a 94% in Hunter Education in Kerrville.

The family is very poor and meat is what they are after. Thanks this help a lot

I would be careful with that advice deer hunting or otherwise.

How selfish of you, with that attitude your grandchildren won't have any deer to hunt.

I think the consequences of breaking the law and getting caught (assuming harsh penalties are handed down) would be a much worse experience then letting an illegal buck walk and not shooting one this season.

I believe the fine for an illegal buck is like $500, and if they want to sock it to you it can be as high as $2500 (any game wardens out there correct me if I'm wrong). Remember they just passed a law that makes it a FELONY to poach a deer of anothers property. Texas takes it deer herd seriously.

A picture of a smiling child with their first kill is worth more than all the freaking trophies in this State.
Any deer is legal in the county we hunt in.
I don't need anyone telling me how to instruct or let my children hunt, thank you!!

                            Walker,

I think they read your post like I did at first blush...that you were promoting illegal hunting activities. You didn't indicate what your county restrictions were, while posting on a thread that was dealing with the new harvest regulations.

I do follow hunting regulations and if I was in a restricted county my kids would'nt break the law either. This thread was started by Tink and he doesn't live in a restricted county. I missed the part about new harvest regulations.
