    How are travel trailers measured??

I hate to tap into the TBH brain trust for such a trivial matter, but I need to know (and google was no help).
Is it total tongue to bumper length?
Or the length of the actual enclosed trailer sitting on the frame?

The reason I ask is in my Travel trailer shopping I keep running into people listing their trailer as a 27' (for instance).
But when I look on NADA it won't list a 27' in that year model for that brand.

One person told me "well, it says 27' on the title".

Is it possible the state/title listed it differently than the Travel trailer manufacturers have them listed?

    Thanks for the help,
    DaveC

    Dave,
I would be willing to bet it's measured front of tongue to rear of trailer, but I'm not 100% sure. I know my buddies boat's title calls it a 16' but its actually only a 14' boat (tip of bow to rear motor plate) and the rest comes from the tongue and rear of the trailer. If you google TxDOT there should be link on there with your regional office contact info. They would be able to clarify it for you. Hope this helps you out.

Most travel trailers have a model number on a silver plate that is normally located on the left side of the tongue. The first 2 digits are the length. For example, a 2752 would be a 27'. A 2140 would be a 21'. I believe they are measured including the tongue.

I have always been told bumper to tongue. Kinda misleading if you ask me.

Humm, my title says 29' but on the side of the trailer (near entrance door) it says 31' foot Jayco Quest! It must be from the tip of the tongue to the rear.

My title says 27'. That is the measurement of the box. Bumper to tongue is around 32'.

I'm under the impression (only things I've heard, nothing I've personally investigated) that the state titles trailers as over all length, but most manufacturers info lists inside living space..... so a 27 ft man description would be titled in Texas as a 31 or 32 ft trailer....

Usually model # refers to the "box" size and the title will show overall lenght. LR I think they may have reversed your #s when the dealer titled it.

Subtract the distance from the length of the box?

Thanks for all the replies fellas.

Now the question is spend ~ 9k+ for a few "newer" model (2-5yo) or ~5k for a 10+ yo model.

When I started this quest I was in the under 5k camp, but the closer I get to spending the money the newer campers are looking more appealing (at twice the cost).

The wife is pushing towards a newer, but there goes my side by side for a few more years .

                              Decisions,decisions.......any advice??

FWIW, this was supposed to be a deer lease only trailer.......but a few fishing/camping trips per year wouldn't be out of the question....
