If they ask where you're going, simply and kindly tell them that it's not important.

I like what systemt said about taking an opportunity to do what is best for your family. Who can argue with that? OK I've worked for one company that tried but they didn't want to lose me... it just wasn't working out on my end and I told them that I was going to put family first and dodged the question of where in that way...

Why lie? Tell them that you are going to a place where you feel is a better opportunity for your family and yourself, Don't make it drama filled as you need to leave on good terms for good reference, you don't need to tell where, but you can answer truthfully....

I've never gone to an exit interview, It's been requested but I simply say that I have nothing to discuss with anyone pertaining to my past employment.

When quitting a job I've run the gambit from knocking the ahole on his butt to staying an extra two weeks because they needed me to complete a job. But I've never been worried about telling them where I'm going next; that is IF I actually knew... at least once I didn't plan that far ahead...

Personally I have always chosen not to burn bridges and be polite. You never know what kind of takeover may happen and that old work place may become appealing again.

They will want/need to know where you are going to decide if they want to keep you around for the 2 weeks notice.

Skip the exit interview unless you really have somthing to tell them as far as a reason you left, that could benefit others still working there.

                  Good luck.

Here's the deal. If you mention you are going to a competitor... expect to be shown the door right then and there. You may be resigning and giving 2 weeks... but they may not want that 2 weeks; they would essentially terminate you from thier end.

Now that may or may not happen, but you should be prepared for that to happen. If you do not want that to happen, then do not mention where you are moving on to. Some of the other statements that have been offered are good.

Have a good poker face. If you are sticking around for 2 weeks and they ask "so where are you going" and you say something to the affect "I would rather not say" then they will likely presume it is a competitor.

Its been said already. But I simply said "im doing what I think is best for my family" The manager got a little pushy so I told him "theres no changing my mind, you left your last job because you thought this place was a better fit for you and your goals, and im doing the same, goodbye"

If you divulge where you are going and the competitor is a true "arch rival" you may be escorted out the door right then. I don't know what level of employment you are? Is there going to be some bad blood? Are you privy to certain things, like proprietary information, access to documents, etc....of the current employer and will they feel threatened during those 2 weeks? If you haven't signed a Non Compete Clause (as stated) you should be fine but your integrity is in question. They are eventually going to find out the truth...so WHY LIE?

You may have to be willing to potentially forfeit a couple weeks of pay (little vacation?). I personally would talk to the NEW company and tell them the situation. That you WANT to leave on good terms and provide former employer 2 weeks notice. They may be willing to start you 2 weeks EARLY in the event you are immediately terminated....otherwise, enjoy the 2 weeks off!

                          Thanks for all the advice.

The deed is done. Started with HR/Bus Mgr and let it go up the chain from there.
So, far I've gone with "let's just say...I'm going somewhere else."

                          A little awkward..but it'll pass.
