BTW, if I reported it stolen, I am committing the crime..... as much as I'd like to!

Anyone have access to track down some information. I received an invoice from HCTRA with several charges for toll violations on a trailer that I sold 4 or 5 years ago. Even though it was not any of my vehicles pulling this trailer, they are sending me the fines.

HCTRA has told me that I needed to send them a bill of sale or some proof that I no longer own the trailer. I'm pretty sure I had a bill of sale at the time, but being that long ago, I could not find it for the life of me. They also said I could contact the DMV and that they should be able to provide me with the information needed to get this resolved. Called the DMV, and no records were available for that plate. I'm assuming because it hasn't been registered since I sold it. Funny thing is the lady on the phone at HCTRA said their records indicated the DMV said I had cancelled the plates.

I really don't know what to do here. I could pay the violations, but I'd still be responsible for anything in the future.

The License plate on the trailer is 80Y DWD (Texas plate). I can't tell from the picture on the violation, but I don't even think it is the trailer I sold. Please, any advice would be greatly appreciated. Definitely learning a lesson on this one.
Tags have to be renewed EVERY year, so if you sold this 4-5 years ago the tags would have been expired. Or if they new buyer renewed these tags they will have a payment record, doesn't sound good for the new buyer if that is the case.

was finally able to speak with someone at HCTRA that could actually think for themselves. Problem solved. Good thing, was getting pretty put off to say the least.

I agree, someone is about to owe an a-load of money.

but you still need to notify the state or this problem will only continue.

They fined us a while back to the tune of 2700.00. My wife paid it, long story, and then we had all of the previous paperwork sent in with vehicles, address changes, and payments. We came out on top and they have been saying they were sending us a refund since February. No check yet

Things like this is why I take the plates off any trailer or vehicle I sell. You can print out a temporary form that allows the new owner to travel to the DPS to get a new plate thus getting you off the hook for anything that may happen between here and there.

For selling vehicles I go on the Texdot website. They have an online form where you notify them you sold the vehicle and who you sold the vehicle to. That automatically relieves you of any future liability for tickets, tolls, etc. I sold a car back in the 70's before they had that. They used the car in an armed robbery a month later without transferring the title. That was exciting.

Same thing happened to my dad several years back. Mr. Earley, we have a picture of your vehicle leaving the seen of an armed bank robbery. That will get your attention. My dad had sold the car several months before this conversation. The jackwagon that bought it never changed the registration.

Trust me, happened to me so GO IN PERSON TO THE DMV in your area. Same thing happened when I sold my son's truck when he deployed to Afghanistan (he said for me too so NO wise A.. remarks.) The plates are STILL in your name thus the charges.
