    Another Snake ID

The kids and I caught this guy tonight at the house. I'm pretty sure it's a good guy, so we caught it and released it at a creek not far from the house. Because we weren't sure, we were very careful with it, which ended up being 2 lessons in 1 for the kids. Treat them all as poisonous when not sure and live and let live when you can...

    My guess is rat snake.

One way to tell if it is venomous or not is the pupils. Round pupils= non-venomous

Another easy trick is to learn the four venomous snakes and what they look like. Then if you see one, you can tell if its one of the four or not. If not then you're good to go

Yes sir thats your good ole fashion Rat Snake... They can keep your mouse pop down to nothing. We bought and caught about 15 and let them go in our barn, within a month they had cleared out the mice pop... Cool snakes.

He did emit an odor when we caught him, so that makes sense. I tried to see his pupils, but he was just beginning his shed cycle as his head was a little cloudy, which also made him quite ornery - he was striking at everything close to him. I try to know the main poisonous snake and knew it wasn't a rattler, coral or copperhead. Just wasn't 100% sure of the cottonmouth...at least not sure enough to handle him. All the neighbor kids thought it was cool and about 5 of them came with me to release him. Good learning experience for everyone.
