Is there a product that will really work on engine sludge? I've always heard of adding 1/2 quart of transmission fluid to oil, and I know there are a million products out there. Anybody have real experience with any of these?

There is no full proof way of getting rid of engine sludge short of an engine tear down. Yes, there are a lot of products that do work at dissolving the sludge, but keep this in mind. When sludge is dissolved, you end up with chunks of it making it's way into the oil pan. They have to go through narrow passages that can easily end up getting clogged up, which can cause other problems.
The best way to get rid of sludge is to do regular oil changes to prevent it from happening to begin with.
Keep this in mind too. Just because an engine has high mileage, it does NOT mean that there is sludge in the motor. A few months ago I did a lot of work to my 1994 F150 that has 266,000 miles. I removed the valve cover and I replaced the oil pan amongst other things. There was not a speck of sludge in the motor at all, and actually it looked almost like new. It has obviously been well taken care of.

There are several different options.
Just keep in mind, everything you use will never yield 100%. I would say first time +-50%, second time another 10% and continuously get better.
Best tips would be to run proper oil, synthetic will yield the least sludge buildup over time, and also change the oil at the proper intervals.
Hope I helped...

Kano Laboratories makes a product called Kreen.
I use this product and some others that Kano makes and have had good results. They are the same company that makes Kroil penetrating oil.Last edited by 12 point; 04-23-2014, 11:31 AM.
