ME and my wife are looking to get into team roping ( looked into sorting but not really a team sport, and dont have a 3rd for penning)
I have a had a couple lesson when i was younger and loved it just didnt have time or place to do it back then, i do now.
My wife has had horses all her life and trained all of them and has won natanal championships in precision and drill team on them but looking for somthing new.
We are not trying to make a living or win lots of money just somthing to play around with and have fun and do some local stuff if we get good enough.
1st I need a horse to rope with, not sure if i should get a older horse and let it teach me a thing or two or a mid age one that still needs some work. Im positive if my wife knew what to do she could teach it.
2nd is there any clinics close to houston or whithin a couple hours away, we are whilling to drive as well.
3rd any other pointers you have to get us started would be great thank.
This can get us started lol thanks again for any help.
A few years ago, you could get a good trained roping horse for dirt cheap. Not sure how it is now. I roped a little in college, never that good. Tried heading and healing. When I get done with my career training and get home, I'm going to do some break away calf roping to get back into it.
Lots of fun, but it takes lots of practice to be able to throw a rope off a horse moving at 25mph.
Get a roping dummy and start the ground work in your backyard until you get the horse and big item stuff figured out.
Def go to a reputable roping school, as far as horses go get a seasoned rope horse. One that has been down the road, you can always move up once you feel comfortable and your runs become more consistant. I love to rope, but good rope horses are not cheap! Every once in awhile you will come across a good deal. I will keep my out for a some horses for you. Good Luck!
Buy a finished horse. Worst thing you can do is try to train a horse at the same time you are trying to learn. You can find affordable finished roping horses. They may not be the best, but they know what to do.
