My second 2013 buck is done macerating!!

I hope this guy can break me into the 120's! Either way, I'm in love with all the character he has. He was a real fightin' bruiser.

I put the skinned head in a Rubbermaid tub full of water and let it sit. I changed the water a few times, and just let the bacterial growth do all of the work.

It took five months due to the long, cold winter we had this year, but if this had been a season opener buck, it would have only taken a month or so. More heat = much faster results.

Now, I'm going to give it a peroxide bath for a day, and it will be ready for the wall!

Not bad for a total cost of $7 in peroxide and some patience!

I wish he had it too, and I gave him two passes that morning before he finally showed up a third time, and ran out my patience!

I ended up dropping him with the neck shot at 183 yards.

                      Surely it's not that simple?

I know it's hard to believe, but it really is that simple!

                        1. Put skinned skull (I usually cut out most of the tongue also) in a Rubbermaid bin, covering all of the flesh.

                        2. After about a month, change out the water.

                        3. If its warm, by about 6 weeks, you'll see the lower jaw has fallen off an almost no meat remains.

                        4. Pick off any last little bits of meat with pliers ( e.g. Leftover meat in orbital sockets or at the king bone at the base of the neck.

                        5. Hose it off really well, ensuring that the brain cavity and sinus/gland tunnels are totally clean.

                        6. Put in hydrogen peroxide bath for one day, with antlers above the liquids surface. Baste the top of the skull with peroxide since it will not be submerged due to the antlers being kept dry.

                        7. Done! $7 in peroxide, one Rubbermaid bin, and some patience. I'll take that over paying $100+ for a euro any day!

Here is the peroxide bath. I'm using the containers to displace the liquid to raise the level in the tub. Almost done!!
