    Houston, we have a problem...

The Apollo 13 mission safely splashed down today 44 years ago in 1970. What was supposed to have been the 3rd trip to the moon was cut short by an oxygen tank explosion 2 days into the flight. One of the best lines from the movie was in flight control when they were waiting for the capsule to re-enter earths atmosphere and there was a huge concern it may not stand up to the intense heat. Someone said to the flight commander that it might be a dark day for NASA. The flight director said he didn't think so, that he thought it would be there finest hour. And in many ways he turned out to be correct.

On a side note, I think it is a real shame that the USA no longer has a space vehicle. Its real sad when we have to rely on the Russians to bring an American astronaut to the space station.

Definitely a glorius day when they made it home safe.

As for the Russians having the only vehicle, it looks like Space X is close to having something for our astronauts to ride in pretty soon. They just signed a 20 year lease on the shuttle launch pad.
