As competitive as it is these days to get hired on, it would only benefit you to be as marketable as you can when you start testing. Even depts such as Dallas will hire certified guys and put them through a fast track academy and get them assigned to stations much faster. My dept requires 30 college hrs, TCFP basic Firefighter cert and we are Paramedic preferred. Not being civil service we can put Paramedics that pass the written and PAT at the top of the list. Never pass up an opportunity to take a test. Most cities will keep an eligibility list for 1 yr after the test.
