My theory was always to get hired and have the department pay for my certifications, oh yeah, and pay me while I'm in school! It worked out for me.
That may be the case with some of the bigger depts. However there are many depts in the metroplex that require you to already be certified and some are even Paramedic preferred. As competitive as it is these days to get hired on, it would only benefit you to be as marketable as you can when you start testing. Even depts such as Dallas will hire certified guys and put them through a fast track academy and get them assigned to stations much faster. My dept requires 30 college hrs, TCFP basic Firefighter cert and we are Paramedic preferred. Not being civil service we can put Paramedics that pass the written and PAT at the top of the list. Never pass up an opportunity to take a test. Most cities will keep an eligibility list for 1 yr after the test.

Very true. What I meant, and probably wasn't clear, is to take the tests he qualifies for even while he's still in school. I don't work for a large department, yet we still send guys to school, if you're already in school, many times we will let you finish with the class you're in, pay for the school, and pay you from you hire date forward, rather than forcing you to drop out and enroll in our school. By all means, he needs to go to school, having the certs opens doors to more departments, but that shouldn't be interpreted to imply that he has to finish school before he starts testing. If he doesn't get picked up before school is finished, he's not out anything, but if he does, he stands to gain a lot IMO.

Like you, I was also a LEO/Volunteer FM and certified as a Paramedic for over 20 years both in GA and TX. Tell him to get his PARAMEDIC certification and good luck to him!
