    Remote computer repair

My laptop has become a paper weight over the last few months. Started with a virus that will not allow downloads and morphed into programs shutting down or freezing, or the laptop shutting down on its own. It's to the point now that just having the computer on uses so much wifi trying to constantly run add ons (or assorted other junk) that no other device in the house will work. My dad had his computer remotely repaired instead of taking it in. I'd like to do the same but he doesn't remember who did his repair and I've read some companies that offer this service are nothing more than identity thieves trying to get access to your computer. Anyone have a company they recommend or would I be better just taking it to a repair shop?
