    What would you do?

My wifes 2000 Silverado popped a head gasket this past weekend. I have a quote to fix the current motor that has 225,000 miles on it for 1500-1800$. Repair shop also gave me a quote for $3100 to put a used long block that has 87,000 miles. KBB says the truck is worth $5600 if sold out right and around $4100 on a trade in. I am capable of doing the repairs myself but my with my schedule its not an option. Thanks for yalls insight on the matter

Fix it, sell it, and buy another vehicle........with that many miles there will be a lot of other problems that start to pop up

I personally would not put a used motor in it. I would either fix it good enough to sell, or put a new motor in a drive it another 100k or better

this is to pull the heads, check/repair them and replace the head gaskets.

This is not an option right now. My wife is going to nursing school.

Do the cheaper repair on its own motor and sell it. If its not a new motor, you really have no clue in the other 87k mile one was treated worse than your 225k one. You are still being honest but are out of it for the least amount of money.

One thing for sure on this is I know the history of the current short block in it. I have always run Mobil 1 synthetic extended performance and changed the oil at 10,000 instead of the recommended 15,000. I do have to had a quart every couple months and I think its because I have a leak on the oil pan. Motor has never smoked.

Fix your current motor and keep on driving it brother. A new one is going to hurt you right now with your current situation.

I hate car payments so I would shell out for a new crate motor or have someone with a GREAT reputation rebuild yours.

It's hard to find a good engine builder. At my shop we only install the engines from O'reilly Auto parts. They come with a warranty that is hard to beat (3 year unlimited parts and labor). They are pricey but well worth it. If you decide to go that route let me know. The store in your area can use my acct. number to save you some $.
