    Our First Turkey

On Saturday March 15 my wife and I shot our FIRST Turkey. It was the afternoon hunt on opening day. We were down south of Victoria at my bosses lease just enjoying being able to hunt together without the kids for a short weekend. She refuses to deer hunt with me, but doesn't mind dove hunting and is now Hooked on turkey hunting. We were in a pop up blind at the top of a hill, under a huge oak tree with a good clearing in front of us looking straight down the gravel road. There was a fence line behind us and a drop off to the river past that. There was a large section of wooded area on both side of the road that we were looking down. My wife had take the squawk box from me and was making a bunch of short churps - 3 at a time - and after a few attempts and some waiting we heard what we thought was a group of toms about 200 yards to our 2:00 deep in the weeds. My wife made 3 small clucks and we listened. When the Tom called back we both all most jumped out of our seats! We were both pumped! My wife actually talked this tom in. He appeared out of the woods on our left and was on the gravel road about 175 yards straight in front of us. She called him again and he started heading our way. We got to see it all. He gobbled, flared his tail, went into full strut when he saw the decoys, and got with in 20 yards of us. I told my wife "You better shoot him now, 'cause he ain't gonna be here much longer!" She shot and the bird was knocked down but got up quickly and started running down the road, so I finished him off. 23 pounds, 9" beard, 1 1/4" spurs....A trophy for sure and memories for ever. By the way, I'm doing a fan mount and seem to have lost the beard of all things. Does any one have an idea of a replacement for a turkey beard? I think some black horsetail hare might work. BTW- we had no idea how to properly pose with a turkey.
