Cozumel is supposed to be #2 dive spot on the world after the Great Barrier Reef. It was great and I personally really enjoyed it. The current lets you go along the wall with little effort. You can see a lot on one tank dive.

    Have fun and be safe!
The Bahamas and Belize are great but Cozumel is awesome. We have taken many dive trips there. My wife and I have regular open water certs but my FIL is a Dive Master and actually lived on Cozumel for a few years.
We had a really scary dive there one year on a reef system called Tormentos Reef with a bad under tow current. The current that day was especially bad and dangerously fast...everyone got separated from their buddy and surfaced at different areas, hundreds of yards apart. That ain't good! It was the craziest dive we have ever encountered.

          Scuba is a blast.

I've dove Gulf of Mexico, Cozumel, Belize, Cayman and the Bahamas.

The best water out of those places imo was Cozumel, with Belize in second. They are probably all about the same in ideal conditions. That's the deal, depending on the wind and tide conditions during your stay, will have an affect on the water clarity. I hit Grand Cayman at a bad time and the water wasn't that great; even the dive masters were telling everyone that. I must have hit Cozumel just right, because, it was a complete wow factor when you hit the water.

My favorite overall place to stay out of those was on Ambergris Caye, Belize.

I will say, I got broken in on diving the hard way. One of my first ocean dives was a rig in the Gulf of Mexico. Water clarity was bad at only about 30 feet. Definitely an erie feeling on the first ascent when you are about 50 feet down and can't see the bottom or the surface. You will not have that problem in Cozumel, Belize, Cayman, etc, as water clarity is typically 100 foot plus.

Oh yeah, if you have a chance to do a night dive. Definitely do it.
