    Pits and smoker calculations?

I know I've seen someone post a calculator that figures firebox size, stack size, etc for pits.

Is there such an animal for a smokehouse, or do you just pour the smoke to it and letter rip?

One of my next projects (in my free time ) is a smokehouse.
Due to the design, it will not be cheap, or easy, to rebuild this thing once it's done.
I want it to work right, the first time.

Is there a science to it?

Kevin if you are cold smoking there is no real formula. Most formulas where smokers are concerned have to do with heat and maintaining it with ample flow.

My brother has a 7x14x really tall" smokehouse and he runs a little fire in an old steel wheel.....you can see the "firepit" on the left with the two handles

I have a separate fire box for my 4x4 box that's twice the size of his fire.

You just need to get smoke to the meat and let it have a place to escape. If the firebox is separate like mine you do need to make sure it will draft but I'd have mine internal if the house was big enough.

Can you post some more pics of your setup?? It looks like I could maybe run a tube from the stack of my small pit into a box and use it maybe...

Are you talking the actual smokehouse?

Here a few ....I have a build thread in the DIY forum. The last pic shows the up pipe from a few years ago. We have made some changes to the floor and are going to center the pipe more now.....let me know if you need more..

I'm assuming that it works best if the smoke is coming in, in the middle?
It's hard to tell from your pictures, Jason, does the pipe run uphill from your fire box to the smoke house?
Will it flow, down hill? Seems like it would come out the vents in the fire box, if you got it higher than the stack outlet.

I just like it in the middle because it is shorter to the walls on all sides getting to all the links. If I have it all the way up against the back the lower front won't get as even a smoke.....especially on windy days. We do rotate but It just helps it be more even in this particular house.

Yes it does...very slightly uphill. I have to put my house on the deck to get it to do so. In my experience the smoke has to flow straight or uphill or you risk backflow on a calm day..
